My ignorance about networking was officially over. They also however would give ideas and tips learned from previous Jay Abraham seminars that had made them in some cases millions of dollars, for free! Because they loved business, because they loved helping people grow their business and getting new ideas for their own. After the break after lunch and chatting to a very successful businessman, I suddenly realised, that yes these people wanted to create more business, yes they wanted to know whether we had something we could offer each other business-wise. Networking turnaround – a realisationĪfter 6 hours, i.e. So for the first 6 hours of this seminar I kept myself so myself, being polite by not engaging with anybody properly. For myself, what made it so much more challenging was that these people would make their language more complicated than it needed to be, to make themselves sound important and also to (by my perception) try and intimidate me into feeling like I did not know something. They were only interested in how much money I could make them and their own self importance. I used to actively dislike networking events and used to avoid them, because I ‘knew’ that it would be one or more people coming up to me with their ‘noise’ trying to sell to me, not interested in me or my business. I dislike the ‘noise’ of ‘self appointed’ sales and marketing gurus, who seem to take great delight in making things complicated in an effort to make themselves seem more important and somehow that they have more value. “ and I am going to prove it to you” Why I was very wary of – networkingĪfter having been in business for about 4 years by then, I loved the sound of this somewhat brash statement. I thought to myself “ I am definitely leaving after 1 ½ days but I will get all the value I can”. “There are only 3 ways to grow your business” The opening line was – 3 ways to grow your business The seminar by Jay Abraham – the opening statement The unbelievable offer was that if we go on the seminar and decide this is not for us, then we get to keep the pre seminar materials. This book even had typos and poor grammar, says he who the grammar police would lock up and throw away the key! I met a few people who bought it previously at the seminar.

Genuinely! The book by Jay Abraham was perceived as having so much value, people were actually paying that for it. One book alone used to sell back tehn for over $1000. Books, audio recordings (back when they were tapes!). A box 1m (3ft approx) by 1m arrived crammed with really great looking materials. I the pre seminar materials arrived and I was blown away. And anyway, I was going to leave after 1 ½ days anyway! So no harm done.

So, in true gung ho fashion, I signed up and did not tell my partner how much the seminar was either. I had no savings worth talking about, as I was ploughing the money back into my business. I did not have much money back then, had a mortgage, car and the usual stuff most people had. If after 1 ½ days I did not feel I would make 10 times that money in a year, I could leave and get to keep the pre course materials. The offer was to be able to go to his seminar for 3 days. I talked about this in a previous post about referral marketing. I love when people tell me how they are making more money, just by changing a small thing. I love watching people light up as they talk about the new great things they have done, how they have improved their product or service. I love business and the creativity that it evokes in people.
